查爾斯·霍華德以前是個自行車修理工，因為向美國西部引進汽車賺了錢。他買了一匹個頭很小的馬，名字叫做Seabiscuit，直接翻譯過來意思是海洋餅干。霍華德和半盲的前拳擊冠軍瑞德·波拉德和以前從事表演的湯姆·史密斯組成了一個小組訓練他的小個子賽馬，波拉德做騎師而史密斯則擔任訓練師。海洋餅干和它的三人小組開始了一個傳奇的旅程，而三個人的人生路也從此改變。在這之前，三個人都因為各自的原因顯得是生活中的失敗者，為家人朋友所遺棄，無法實現自己的理想。霍華德靠汽車交易發財，兒子卻在交通事故中喪生，妻子要求離婚；波拉德從小愛好騎馬，而他的家庭在失去一切以后任由他四處流浪；史密斯本是個牛仔，能馴服任何暴烈的野馬，卻也到處浪蕩，無所歸依。他們的馬海洋餅干也和主人相仿佛，是賽馬中的失敗者，不僅個子比尋常賽馬小，看上去腿也有問題。但是當三個人開始訓練這匹看起來沒什么希望的馬，人和馬的執著勁頭都顯露出來，他們的堅韌和勝利在那個灰暗的年代給整個國家帶了了希望。
