　　在全美范圍內出現了一種奇怪的病毒，只要人類感染上這種病毒就會變成僵尸。隨后僵尸就變成了病毒的攜帶者，繼續肆虐地感染著不知真相的人類。當人們發現真相時，為時已晚，全美只有幾個人還是幸存者，到處都是要吞噬人類的僵尸。這些幸存者想穿越美國大陸，走到港口，他們希望在那里能有船只載他們離開美國，遠離僵尸。
　　
　　幸存者中有一個人名叫哥倫布，他是一個膽小如鼠的人，但是他并不害怕僵尸，對于親手殺掉他們也不膽顫，不過他不想惹事；他的朋友塔拉哈西，是一個暴力狂，每天都要舉著AK殺僵尸，他的目標就是要親手殺掉所有的僵尸。在逃亡的路途中，他們遇見了兩個女人威其托和小巖石。她們也是幸存者，也要去港口逃命。一路上他們分享著活命的技巧、建立起了“生死友情”。
